When Tyler and I talk later that evening and the following morning, we talk mainly about him and our plans for the future.

I want to tell him about the pregnancy test so badly, but I bite my tongue. I made an appointment with the doctor for later this afternoon and I want to make sure that I'm actually pregnant before we start having all of these conversations.

Besides, I'm still buying myself some time.

I know that Tyler needs to know and I will tell him, but I wanted to sleep on the decision to see how I actually felt about it. This is my body and it has to be right for me.

I have never considered being a mom before. Lots of women grow up imagining their lives as mothers, but I never thought about that before. It's silly to say that, especially given the fact that I work with children, but for some reason they always seem to belong to other people, not to me.

I know what happens to women when they become mothers. Of course, there are some that can have it all, as the saying goes, but for the most part, we are the ones who are stuck taking care of the child and letting our dreams fall to the wayside.

That wouldn’t necessarily have to happen to me, right? I already got my degree in speech therapy and I started a new business. I can keep getting new clients and teaching the kids for as long as I can. It wouldn’t interfere with my life as I know it.

But what about afterward? After the baby is born?

When I get to the appointment, the nurse at the front desk tells me that I was lucky to get it because usually they are booked two to three weeks in advance, if not more, but someone had canceled and I just happened to call.

I say thank you, but she still doesn't seem satisfied. I don't know what she wants from me, but I'm too nauseous and uncomfortable to delve into it.

Before seeing the doctor, a nurse hands me a small plastic container and shows me where the bathroom is. I pee into it and then she shows me into a smaller waiting room. Here, there are no magazines, but I keep myself occupied with my phone. Fifteen minutes later a doctor in her early thirties comes in and confirms the pregnancy.

Everything else after that is a blur. I remember telling her that I feel very nauseous and can barely get out of bed in the morning so she writes me a prescription for Diclegis. She tells me that this is basically a slow release of an over-the-counter sleeping pill called Unisom and B12 vitamins.

She has a sample and I take one. I slowly feel better. She tells me to eat crackers and to try to keep something in my stomach at all times.

Finally, the appointment is over. As soon as I get back to my car, I regret the fact that I didn't tell Tyler and burst into tears because he wasn't there with me.
